I have read of many failure issues for this radio which is sad since it is a pretty nice set when operating as it should.I have one of these and the performance is quite good. I do have the schematics for it and will dig into it at some point. It has lately developed the case where the S meter reads full scale all of the time even though the radio still works. The older 700 feels like a more solid radio but it has to be given all that is put into a much smaller case.My E1XM (would have been the next in the Satellit series if Grundig had stayed in business) is another story. It is hard to compare it to its Satellit 700 predecessor which I bought on a trip to Germany when they were new because there is really no commonality between the two.
The returned units from the first two runs were reworked by RL Drake and sold for a lower price as refurbs. It wasn't until the third run that the quality began to meet expectations. They were able to fix some of the bugs in the second run, but not all. I remember when the first run of these radios came out and it was pretty disastrous, with a very high return rate. Loosen the nuts on the pots and there's 6 or 8 deepset screws holding the chassis to the front panel. The plastic 'chassis' comes out easy enough. Once you tackle getting the back cover off the worst part is over. Not as daunting as it looks at first glance. The quality issues are really tragic with this one because the radio is so excellent otherwise.I finally got into mine today. One thing I have noted is that the rubber coating on the radio is starting to get rather sticky, as if it is breaking down somewhat.
I'll be going to the front panel board tomorrow since my problem shows commonality to both modes.
